More than 40% of child labour advocates agree that employers must make it a priority to hire workers from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Child labour advocates are hoping that the latest report, which was released by the US Department of Labor, will encourage employers to follow their lead.
The latest report from the department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics says that between 2000 and 2018, the number of jobs created by US companies in this field increased from 11.4 million to 14.7 million, a 3.3% increase.
The report says that child labour has increased in both the supply and demand chains of the US economy.
In addition, the report says, there has been an increase in child labor in the processing of food products and food services, which are also areas where there are substantial shortages.
The number of children employed in food service jobs grew by 17.7% between 2000-2018.
Child workers are often paid less than adults in these positions, which means that they do not receive any benefits.
“The problem of child labor has been a very real one for quite some time,” said Laura Molloy, a child labor advocate at the Center for American Progress.
“It’s not only on the job, it’s in the school system.
It’s in all areas of our economy.”
Molloy added that the current administration has taken steps to address the problem.
In November, the administration announced a policy that requires businesses to hire more children in childcare, which the administration says will provide more opportunities for children to gain a higher education.
“But what we don’t want is for those employers who are not willing to take on this responsibility to be blamed for the problem of these young children who are exploited in this very labor-intensive business model,” Mollooy said.
The Bureau of Labour Statistics says there are more than 500,000 children working in child services in the United States.
While it is important to have a conversation with employers, Molloya said that employers should also be concerned about the issue.
“This report is important not only because it lays out the trends, but because it shows employers have a responsibility to do something about it,” she said.
“We’ve heard from people who have said that they’ve been told that they can’t hire children for certain jobs because they’re in this area of child work, and I think it’s important to hear those kinds of stories.”
